London City Airport Transfer

London City sits in the Royal Docks in Newham, closer to the financial districts than any other London airport. It is built around short-haul business routes, with a compact single terminal and famously quick check-in and security. That speed is the reason people choose it — and it is exactly why the ground transfer should not undo the time saved.

Canary Wharf is typically 10 to 15 minutes away by road, and the City around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. The West End is usually 30 to 45 minutes. A pre-booked car waiting on arrival keeps the whole journey to the same standard as the flight.

London City is a common first or last leg rather than a destination in itself, and inter-airport transfers are a regular part of what we do here. Heathrow is typically 60 to 90 minutes across London depending on traffic, Gatwick around an hour and a half, and Stansted roughly an hour. On a connection, the road transfer is usually the longest and least predictable part of the itinerary.

If you are connecting between airports on the same day, give us both flight numbers when booking. We track the inbound arrival and build a realistic allowance into the onward leg rather than assuming a clear run across London — which, on a cross-city transfer at the wrong hour, it rarely is.

London City is well served by the DLR, and for a solo traveller heading to Canary Wharf or Bank with hand luggage it is genuinely quick and hard to beat on price. It is worth saying so plainly rather than pretending otherwise.

A car makes more sense when the calculation changes: travelling as a group, carrying luggage or equipment, heading somewhere off the DLR network, arriving late when service is reduced, or collecting a client where turning up on the DLR is not the impression you want to make. For most business travel through LCY it is the last of those that decides it.
