Wheelchair accessible taxi and airport transfers

Travel24 operates ramp-equipped wheelchair-accessible vehicles across the UK for airport transfers, cruise terminal runs and local journeys. You travel in your own wheelchair, secured by a four-point restraint, with a driver trained to assist with boarding — and there is no additional charge for any of it.

Accessible vehicles are a limited part of any fleet, so these journeys are booked in advance rather than hailed. Tell us what you need when you book and we confirm the specific vehicle before you travel, so nothing is left to chance on the day.

What is included

  • No extra charge for accessibility — the ramp, the securing system and the driver's assistance are all included in the standard fixed fare
  • Travel in your own wheelchair — rear ramp access with a four-point restraint and a separate occupant belt
  • Companions travel with you — seats alongside the wheelchair position for carers and family, at no extra cost
  • Assistance dogs always carried — at no additional charge
  • Flight tracking and meet-and-greet — we meet you inside the terminal rather than expecting you to find the vehicle
  • Trained, licensed drivers — experienced in securing wheelchairs and providing mobility assistance

How to book an accessible transfer

  1. Book at least 48 hours ahead where you can, and earlier for early-morning flights or bank holiday travel.
  2. Tell us about your wheelchair — manual or powered, and the make, model and approximate dimensions if it is a larger powered chair or scooter, so we can confirm compatibility.
  3. Tell us how many are travelling including carers and companions, plus your luggage, so we allocate a vehicle with enough space.
  4. Give us your flight number for arrivals, so we track the landing and meet you in the terminal with free waiting time included.
  5. Confirm your fixed fare — quoted upfront on the same basis as any other transfer of the same distance and vehicle size.

Your rights as a disabled passenger in the UK

UK law gives disabled passengers specific protections when travelling by taxi or private hire vehicle, and it is worth knowing them.

  • Under the Equality Act 2010, drivers of designated wheelchair-accessible vehicles must carry wheelchair users, provide reasonable mobility assistance, and must not charge extra for it.
  • The Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles (Disabled Persons) Act 2022 extended these protections, so disabled passengers cannot be refused or charged more because of their disability.
  • Assistance dogs must be carried at no additional charge.
  • A driver may hold a medical exemption certificate, which must be displayed in the vehicle.

This is a general summary for guidance, not legal advice. For definitive and current information, see the official guidance on GOV.UK or contact your local licensing authority.

Accessible transfer FAQs

How do I book a wheelchair accessible taxi from a UK airport?
Book in advance and state that you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, together with the type of wheelchair you use and its approximate dimensions. Travel24 allocates a ramp-equipped WAV and a driver trained in securing wheelchairs, and confirms the vehicle before you travel. Give your flight number so we can track the arrival and meet you in the terminal. Advance booking matters more than for a standard transfer, because accessible vehicles are a limited part of any fleet.
What are my rights as a wheelchair user booking an airport transfer in the UK?
Under the Equality Act 2010, drivers of designated wheelchair-accessible taxis and private hire vehicles must carry wheelchair users, provide reasonable mobility assistance, and must not charge extra for doing so. The Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles (Disabled Persons) Act 2022 extended protections so that disabled passengers cannot be charged more or refused on the basis of disability. Drivers must also carry assistance dogs at no additional charge. Drivers may hold a medical exemption certificate, which must be displayed. For definitive guidance, see GOV.UK.
Do you charge extra for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle?
No. There is no additional charge for wheelchair access, for the ramp, or for the driver's assistance in boarding and securing the wheelchair. Your fixed fare is quoted on the same basis as any other transfer of the same distance and vehicle size.
What kind of wheelchairs can your vehicles take?
Our wheelchair-accessible vehicles take most manual and powered wheelchairs via a rear ramp, with the passenger travelling in their own chair secured by a four-point restraint system. Very large or non-standard powered chairs and mobility scooters vary in size, so tell us the make, model and dimensions when booking and we will confirm compatibility before you travel.
Can I travel in my own wheelchair, or do I need to transfer to a seat?
You can stay in your own wheelchair for the journey. The chair is secured with a four-point restraint and you are provided with a separate occupant belt. If you would prefer to transfer to a passenger seat, the driver can assist and the wheelchair travels stowed — let us know your preference when booking.
Can a companion or carer travel with me?
Yes. Our wheelchair-accessible vehicles seat additional passengers alongside the wheelchair position, so a companion, carer or family members travel with you in the same vehicle at no extra cost. Tell us the number travelling when booking so we allocate a vehicle with enough seats and luggage space.
Do you carry assistance dogs?
Yes, always, and at no additional charge — this is a legal requirement as well as our policy. Mention the assistance dog when booking so the driver is expecting it and can allocate suitable space.
How far in advance should I book an accessible airport transfer?
We recommend at least 48 hours, and longer for early-morning departures or travel over a bank holiday. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are a limited part of any fleet, so advance notice is the most reliable way to guarantee the right vehicle. We will always try to help with shorter notice, but availability cannot be guaranteed.
